10 Apr Understanding Coercive Relationships: When Love Becomes Control
In a healthy relationship, love, respect, and personal freedom go hand in hand. But when one partner begins to manipulate, monitor, or control the other’s actions, it can cross the line into a coercive relationship—a form of emotional abuse that can be incredibly damaging, yet often hidden from view.
What Is Coercive Control?
Coercive control is a pattern of behaviour that seeks to strip away a person’s independence and sense of self. It’s not always about physical violence—more often, it’s subtle and psychological. It may involve:
•Isolating you from friends and family
•Monitoring your phone, emails, or whereabouts
•Controlling your finances or daily activities
•Criticising, blaming, or gaslighting you regularly
•Making threats or using intimidation to get their way
These behaviours are about dominance, not care. Over time, they can lead to anxiety, depression, and feelings of helplessness.
How to Recognise the Signs
You might be in a coercive relationship if you feel:
•You walk on eggshells to avoid upsetting your partner
•Your freedom or choices are being limited
•You’re being made to feel guilty or ashamed constantly
•You’ve lost confidence or stopped doing things you used to enjoy
•You’re afraid of how your partner will react to everyday decisions
It’s important to remember that coercive control is illegal in the UK under the Serious Crime Act 2015. It is a form of abuse that deserves to be taken seriously.
